6 Ways to Prevent Dry Skin

Dry skin is no joke.

Besides leaving your skin feeling uncomfortably tight and itchy, it also contributes to an overall dull complexion that no one wants!

Many people slather on rich lotions and serums, expecting their skin to immediately bounce back, only to find that isn’t the case.

Dry skin comes down to a few different factors, with the cold weather of the upcoming months being a major one.

Finding ways to navigate your skin through the chilly season comes down to more than just the products you are using on your skin. That is only one piece of the puzzle!

Don’t despair though, in this article we will share our top tips for managing dryness so you can rock a dewy, glowing complexion all Fall and Winter!

1- Don’t over-cleanse your skin

While it’s important to cleanse your skin on a daily basis, you don’t want to overdo it. We recommend washing your face once or twice a day.

But to be honest, if you do a thorough cleanse the night before, then the morning after, a spritz of toner or healing spray on a cotton pad may be all you need to cleanse.

A misting of toner throughout the day is also a good way to infuse extra moisture into your skin whenever you need an extra boost!

You could even make your own, by brewing up a cup of tea like green tea or chamomile tea, allowing it to cool and then pouring into a spray bottle that you can store in the fridge for a few days.

While you may not be able to get away with one cleanse a day during the warmer months when sweat is a regular part of your life, the colder months may allow you to take a step back every now and again.

Our scrubs are a great cleanser option that won't dry your skin. Like, at all.

They'll also help to clean out your pores while removing dead skin cells for silky smooth, baby-soft skin.

2- Invest in a humidifier

A good humidifier can be the one thing that solves all your skincare woes, especially if you have tried everything else with no success.

While we might love our indoor heating when the snowflakes swirl outside and the wind howls, our skin doesn’t feel quite the same way.

Artificial heating saps moisture from the skin leaving it dry, itchy and even at a higher risk of flare-ups. Especially if your skin is very sensitive.

A humidifier will sort this right out, by shooting a continual stream of moisture into the air to replace lost moisture.

You could even try adding some essential oils to enjoy some aromatherapy benefits too!

Lavender and Jasmine to soothe and relax, citrus and peppermint to uplift and help you focus, or any other options that tickle your fancy!

3- Stay protected

Just because you aren’t feeling the heat from the sun doesn’t mean the UV rays aren’t still doing damage.

Keeping your skin protected with a high SPF is just as important in Fall and Winter as it is during the warmer months.

Layer it over the rest of your products, as the last step in your routine, and always be sure to look for a mineral/zinc version that won’t infuse your skin with chemicals.

4 - Use the right kinds of oils

Many people shy away from oils, thinking they are going to make their skin feel oily and sticky, but it all comes down to the type of oil you are using.

Jojoba oil, for example, is the only oil that resembles the skin’s own natural sebum, meaning the skin simply drinks it up!

Jojoba oil will provide a deep dose of hydration, while still controlling excess oil so you won’t have to worry about breaking out.

It sinks right into your pores, leaving your skin soft and supple, but never greasy.

Our Salís Serums are formulated with 100% Certified Organic Jojoba oil so your skin will be getting only the best!

5- Don’t get too steamy in the shower

Hot water strips the skin’s natural oils, leaving it dry and parched.

Leave the hot water running to steam up your bathroom for a minute or two before turning down the heat as you step into your own private oasis.

You’ll still enjoy a steamy experience (your skin will love it too) but you won’t strip your skin of natural oils.

If you can end with a cool rinse then kudos to you because cold water seals the pores and tightens the skin, but we understand if that just isn’t for you!

6- Beware of sugar

You’re probably wondering why we are bringing up sugar in another skincare article.

It's a simple fact that everything you put into your body will have an impact on your skin, whether that’s positive or negative.

Sugar falls on the latter side, contributing to inflammation and sucking water out of your skin cells, contributing to a dry, dull complexion.

This is the time of year when it can be tricky to avoid sugar, especially if you live for all the tasty seasonal treats and drinks.

We know it's not realistic for most of us to completely cut out all the sugary goodness.

Buy you can always substitute some of the artificial sugar treats with a healthy version at home instead, using maple syrup or honey to sweeten. It’s something fun you can do with your friends and family.

If you do treat yourself to Starbucks or other seasonal drinks, ask for half the syrup so you’re at least cutting back. Your skin will thank you!

Dry skin doesn’t have to plague you throughout the chilly season. By following the tips in this article you can be sure to enjoy dewy, hydrated skin, no matter how low the temperatures go!
